DEXCHLORPHENIRAMINE MALEATE

Dexchlorpheniramine Maleate is an antihistamine used to relieve symptoms of allergy, hay fever, and the common cold. It works by blocking histamine, a substance in the body that causes allergic symptoms.

Indications

-Allergic rhinitis -Urticaria -Conjunctivitis -Allergic skin conditions


Dosage

-Adults: 2 mg every 4-6 hours as needed, not to exceed 12 mg in 24 hours. -Children: Dosage varies by age and weight. Consult a physician for appropriate dosage.


Contra-Indications

-Hypersensitivity to dexchlorpheniramine or any component of the formulation -Newborns or premature infants -Nursing mothers -Patients taking monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs)


Special Precautions

-Use with caution in patients with glaucoma, peptic ulcer, urinary retention, or hyperthyroidism -May cause drowsiness; avoid driving or operating heavy machinery -Avoid alcohol and other CNS depressants while taking this medication


Side Effects

-Drowsiness -Dizziness -Dry mouth, nose, or throat -Upset stomach -Thickening of mucus


Drug Interactions

-Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) -Alcohol and other CNS depressants -Tricyclic antidepressants -Anticholinergic drugs
