Dextromethorphan, Pseudoephedrine, and Chlorpheniramine Maleate is a combination medication commonly used to treat symptoms associated with the common cold, allergies, or other respiratory illnesses. Dextromethorphan is a cough suppressant, Pseudoephedrine is a decongestant, and Chlorpheniramine Maleate is an antihistamine.

Indications

This combination medication is indicated for the temporary relief of symptoms caused by the common cold, flu, allergies, or other breathing illnesses. These symptoms may include cough, nasal congestion, runny nose, sneezing, and itchy or watery eyes.


Dosage

Adults and children 12 years and older: Typically, 10 ml (2 teaspoons) of the liquid form every 4-6 hours, not exceeding 4 doses in 24 hours. Children 6 to 11 years: Typically, 5 ml (1 teaspoon) of the liquid form every 4-6 hours, not exceeding 4 doses in 24 hours. Dosage may vary based on specific product formulation and patient condition. Always follow the prescribing doctor's or the package's specific dosing instructions.


Contra-Indications

-Hypersensitivity to any of the active ingredients or excipients in the formulation. -Concurrent use of monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) or within 14 days of stopping such treatment. -Severe hypertension or severe coronary artery disease. -Glaucoma, urinary retention, severe hyperthyroidism.


Special Precautions

-Use with caution in patients with cardiovascular disease, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, hyperthyroidism, prostatic hypertrophy, or glaucoma. -Not recommended for use in children under 6 years of age without medical advice. -May cause drowsiness; avoid operating heavy machinery or driving. -Use with caution in elderly patients, as they may be more sensitive to the effects of the drug.


Side Effects

-Common side effects may include dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth, nose, or throat, headache, and nausea. -Serious side effects may include rapid or irregular heartbeat, severe dizziness, mental/mood changes (e.g., confusion, hallucinations), difficulty urinating, or allergic reactions (e.g., rash, itching, swelling, severe dizziness, trouble breathing).


Drug Interactions

-MAO inhibitors: Can cause hypertensive crisis. -Antidepressants, antipsychotics, and other medications that cause drowsiness: Can enhance drowsiness effect. -Blood pressure medications: May decrease effectiveness. -Alcohol: Can increase drowsiness and dizziness. -Other decongestants or cough-and-cold medications: Can increase the risk of side effects.
