DIETHYL CARBAMAZINE CITRATE

It is the only drug available for filariasis and has a highly selective effect on microfilariae of W. bancrofti and B. malayi from peripheral blood in 7 days. Microfilariae & adult of Loa loa & Microfilariae of Onchocerca volvulus are also susceptible.

Indications

W. bancrofti. B. Malayi, Filarial infection. Tropical eosinophilia.


Dosage

1 mg/kg body wt daily in 3 divided doses, first day,thereafter increase gradually to 6mg/kg body wt daily over 2-3 days after meals. Treat for 21 days.


Contra-Indications

Pregnancy.


Special Precautions

Fall in B.P may occur due to mass destruction of microfilariae and adult worms. The reaction can be minimized by starting with a low dose and give antihistaminics or corticosteroids. renal impairment. Paediatrics: Use with caution. Pregnancy: Contraindicated. Lactation: Use with caution. Elderly: Use with caution.


Side Effects

Nausea, loss of appetite, headache weakness, dizziness, rash, pruritus, enlargement of lymphnodes.
