DIODOHYDROXYQUINOLINE

Diodohydroxyquinoline is an antimicrobial agent used primarily for treating amoebic infections. It is effective against intestinal amoebiasis and serves as a local anti-infective in the intestinal tract.

Indications

-Treatment of intestinal amoebiasis -Non-specific diarrhea -Balantidiasis


Dosage

-Adults: 650 mg orally three times daily for 20 days. -Children: Dosage varies based on age and weight; follow physician's instructions.


Contra-Indications

-Hypersensitivity to diodohydroxyquinoline or any of its components -Thyroid disease -Optic neuropathy or other severe eye disorders


Special Precautions

Use with caution in patients with liver disease or thyroid disorders. -Monitor thyroid function during prolonged use. -Not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding unless absolutely necessary. -Avoid use in children under 2 years of age.


Side Effects

-Nausea -Vomiting Abdominal cramps -Headache -Skin rash -Rare: Optic neuritis, peripheral neuropathy


Drug Interactions

-May interact with thyroid medications, leading to altered thyroid function tests. -Avoid concomitant use with other neurotoxic drugs to prevent additive toxicity.
