DOXEPIN HCL

Doxepin, a dibenzoxepin derivative tricyclic compound, is an effective topical antipruritic proven to be beneficial in the symptomatic relief of pruritus.

Indications

Topically for the short-term (up to 8 days) management of moderate pruritus in patients with atopic dermatitis and lichen simplex chronicus.


Dosage

Apply a thin film of cream 4 times a day with and interval of at least 3-4 hrs between applications.


Contra-Indications

Hypersensitivity to components, untreated narrow angle glaucoma, tendency to urinary retention.


Special Precautions

Effect of alcohol can be potentiated in patients using doxepin cream. It should not be used ophthalmically, orally or intravaginally. Pregnancy and lactation: Should be used only when the potential benefit to the mother outweighs the potential risk to the foetus or infants.


Side Effects

Drowsiness, dry mouth/lips, headache, dizziness, taste disturbances, nausea, anxiety and fever. Local reactions include burning or stinging at the site of application, pruritus/eczema flare-ups, dryness/tightness of skin, paresthesia, oedema, scalig , cracking.


Drug Interactions

Serious side effects and death following the concomitant use of certain orally administered drugs. Cimetidine produce significant fluctuations in steady state serum concentrations of various triyclic antidepressants. Alcohol may potentiate the sedative effects.
