Dutasteride

Dutasteride is a medication primarily used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (enlarged prostate). It works by inhibiting the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone that contributes to prostate growth.

Indications

-Treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) -Management of male pattern baldness (off-label use)


Dosage

0.5 mg orally once a day


Contra-Indications

Hypersensitivity to dutastride and/or finasteride, liver disease or history of; prostate cancer.


Special Precautions

Use only in men; should not donate blood while taking dutasteride and for 6-months after stop taking it, donot drink grape juice, swallow the capsule whole, do not split, chew or crush it, do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one. Paediatric : Keep out of reach of children. Pregnancy: Pregnant women should not handle dutasteride capsule, touching the contents of capsule may harm fetus.


Side Effects

Decrease in sex drive, difficulty ejaculating, breast tenderness or enlargement.


Drug Interactions

Nutritional supplements, herbal products,antifungal-Fluconazole, itraconazole and ketoconazole, cimetidine, ciprofloxacin, clarithromycin, cyclosporine, danazol, delavirdine, dilitazem, erythromycin, fluoxetine, fluvoxamine, protease inhibiotors - indinavir and ritonavir, isoniazid, metronidazole, nefazodone, troleandomycin, verapamil, and zafirlukast.
