Eflornithine

Eflornithine is a medication primarily used to treat African sleeping sickness (Trypanosomiasis) caused by Trypanosoma brucei gambiense. It is also utilized in the treatment of unwanted facial hair in women (hirsutism) as part of a comprehensive approach to manage this condition.

Indications

-Treatment of Trypanosomiasis (African sleeping sickness) caused by Trypanosoma brucei gambiense. -Used in combination with other treatments for the management of hirsutism in women.


Dosage

Topical; 13.9% apply over affected area of face and adjacent area twice daily, do not wash face till 4 hour of application.


Contra-Indications

-Known hypersensitivity to Eflornithine or any of its components. -Caution is advised in patients with severe liver or kidney impairment


Special Precautions

-Monitor for signs of allergic reactions. -Use with caution in patients with renal or hepatic impairment. -Regular monitoring of blood counts is recommended due to potential hematologic side effects.


Side Effects

-Common: Headache, diarrhea, nausea, abdominal pain, rash. -Severe: Severe allergic reactions, bone marrow suppression, liver enzyme abnormalities.


Drug Interactions

Eflornithine may interact with other medications affecting blood cell counts or liver function. Inform the healthcare provider about all concurrent medications.
