Ephedrine

Ephedrine

Primarily acts indirectly but has some direct action on a and b receptors also. It is about 100 times less potent than adrenaline but longer acting (4-6 hrs.). Used as nasal decongestant due to its vasoconstrictive action.

Indications

Nasal congestion.


Dosage

3 drops in each nostril 2-3 times daily.


Contra-Indications

Debilitated patients or those with impaired cough reflex. Infants.


Special Precautions

Prolonged use may cause rebound congestion. Cardiac disease.


Side Effects

Anxiety/restlessness, insomnia, confusion, tremor, urinary difficulties, palpitations/chest pain.


Drug Interactions

Severe hypertension in combination with MAOI ‘s. Reduce antihypertensive effect of bethanidine, guanethidine. Alcohol and Phenobarb antagonise CNS stimulant effect of Ephedrine. Synergistic bronchlator effect but increased incidence of adverse effects with theophylline.
