ERGOMETRINE MALEATE

Ergometrine Maleate is a medication used to manage and treat postpartum hemorrhage. It works by stimulating uterine contractions to prevent or control bleeding after childbirth.

Indications

-Prevention and treatment of postpartum hemorrhage -Management of atonic uterus -Uterine atony


Dosage

-Prevention of postpartum hemorrhage: 200 mcg intramuscularly or intravenously after delivery of the anterior shoulder or immediately after delivery. -Treatment of postpartum hemorrhage: 200 mcg intramuscularly or intravenously as needed, every 2-4 hours.


Contra-Indications

-Hypersensitivity to Ergometrine or any of its components -Severe hypertension -Preeclampsia or eclampsia -Severe cardiac disease


Special Precautions

-Use with caution in patients with mild to moderate hypertension -Monitor blood pressure closely during administration -Avoid prolonged use to prevent ergotism -Use with caution in patients with hepatic or renal impairment


Side Effects

-Nausea and vomiting -Hypertension -Headache -Dizziness -Abdominal pain -Chest pain -Bradycardia or tachycardia


Drug Interactions

-Avoid concurrent use with other ergot alkaloids -Use with caution with vasoconstrictors and sympathomimetics -May interact with certain antibiotics (e.g., erythromycin) -Increased risk of hypertension with triptans
