It is a hematopoietic growth factor. It regulates erythropoiesis by stimulating the differentiation and proliferation of erythroid precursors, stimulating the release of reticulocytes into the circulation & stimulating the synthesis of cellular hemoglobin.


Anaemia of chonic renal failure, anaemia of patients with acquired immuno-deficiency syndrome, anaemia associated with cancer chemotherapy.


Initially 25-50 iu/kg body weight IV over 1-2 minutes, 3 times per week. Dose increment in steps of 25 iu/kg, in intervals of 4 weeks, depending upon initial response. Maint. dose weekly: 100-300 iu/kg in 2-3 injections.


Uncontrolled hypertension, hypersens to mammalian cell producs and hypersens to human albumin.

Special Precautions

Chronic renal failure, IHD, hypertension, pregnancy, seizures, liver dysfunction, lactation.

Side Effects

Hypertensive crisis with encephalopathy like symptoms-headache, confusion, generalised seizures. Thrombosis. Hypertension, myalgia, arthralgia, flu like syndrome, rashes and urticaria.

Drug Interactions

Haematinics enhance efficiency. Increased dose of heparin in patients undergoing dialysis.
