Ethylaminobenzoate

Ethylaminobenzoate, also known as Benzocaine, is a local anesthetic commonly used to relieve pain and discomfort caused by minor skin irritations, sore throats, and minor dental procedures. It works by blocking nerve signals in the body.

Indications

-Topical pain relief for minor skin irritations, cuts, and burns -Relief of sore throats and minor mouth irritations -Used in dental procedures to numb the area -Alleviation of pain from insect bites and stings


Dosage

-Apply a thin layer to the affected area 3-4 times daily -Follow the manufacturer's instructions or the healthcare provider's recommendations


Contra-Indications

-Hypersensitivity to Benzocaine or any of its components -Methemoglobinemia or a history of methemoglobinemia


Special Precautions

-Avoid use in infants under 2 years old without medical advice -Use with caution in patients with G6PD deficiency -Avoid applying to large areas or broken skin -Do not use for prolonged periods without medical advice -Monitor for signs of methemoglobinemia (e.g., cyanosis, headache, fatigue)


Side Effects

-Skin irritation or rash -Allergic reactions such as hives, difficulty breathing, swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat -Methemoglobinemia (rare but serious), characterized by symptoms like blue or gray skin color, headache, fatigue, shortness of breath


Drug Interactions

-Avoid concurrent use with other local anesthetics -Use with caution in patients taking sulfonamides, antimalarials, or other drugs that can induce methemoglobinemia
