Febuxostat
Febuxostat is a xanthine oxidase inhibitor used to treat chronic gout and hyperuricemia. It helps to lower uric acid levels in the blood by inhibiting the enzyme responsible for its production.-Chronic management of hyperuricemia in patients with gout -Prevention of gout flares
-The typical starting dose is 40 mg once daily, which can be increased to 80 mg once daily if serum uric acid levels are not adequately controlled after two weeks. -Dose adjustments may be necessary based on patient response and tolerability.
-Hypersensitivity to Febuxostat or any of its components -Concurrent use with azathioprine or mercaptopurine -Severe renal impairment or severe hepatic impairment
-Monitor liver function tests periodically -Caution in patients with a history of cardiovascular diseases -May require dosage adjustment in patients with mild to moderate renal or hepatic impairment -Advise patients to maintain adequate hydration to reduce the risk of kidney stones
-Common: Nausea, joint pain, rash, liver function abnormalities -Serious: Cardiovascular events, hypersensitivity reactions, liver failure
-Increased risk of toxicity when used with azathioprine or mercaptopurine -Potential interaction with theophylline -Concomitant use with other xanthine oxidase inhibitors should be avoided
