Indications

-Treatment of iron deficiency anemia -Prevention of iron deficiency in certain populations (e.g., pregnant women, children)


Dosage

-Adults: Typically, 100-200 mg of elemental iron per day, divided into 1-3 doses. -Children: Dosage based on age and weight, generally adjusted by a healthcare provider.


Contra-Indications

-Hypersensitivity to ferric hydroxide or any of its components -Hemochromatosis or other iron overload disorders -Peptic ulcer disease or inflammatory bowel disease


Special Precautions

-Monitor for signs of iron overload -Use with caution in patients with a history of gastrointestinal disorders -Consult with a healthcare provider if pregnant or breastfeeding


Side Effects

-Gastrointestinal disturbances (e.g., constipation, diarrhea, nausea) -Darkened stools -Allergic reactions (rare)


Drug Interactions

-Antacids and some antibiotics (e.g., tetracyclines) may reduce iron absorption -Vitamin C can enhance iron absorption
