Ferrous Glycine Sulfate is an iron supplement used to treat or prevent iron deficiency anemia. It combines ferrous sulfate with glycine, an amino acid, to enhance absorption and minimize gastrointestinal side effects.

Indications

-Iron deficiency anemia -Prevention of iron deficiency in pregnant women -Treatment of iron deficiency in patients with chronic blood loss or poor dietary intake


Dosage

-Adults: Typically 100-200 mg of elemental iron daily, divided into 1-2 doses. -Children: Dosage depends on age and weight, generally 3-6 mg/kg/day of elemental iron. -Dosage should be adjusted based on individual needs and clinical response.


Contra-Indications

-Known hypersensitivity to iron or glycine -Hemochromatosis or other iron overload disorders -Certain chronic diseases that impair iron metabolism


Special Precautions

-Use with caution in patients with peptic ulcer disease or gastrointestinal disorders. -Monitor for signs of iron overload, especially in patients with repeated or prolonged use. -Check blood levels periodically to avoid excessive iron accumulation.


Side Effects

-Constipation or diarrhea -Nausea or vomiting -Abdominal pain -Dark stools -Possible allergic reactions (rare)


Drug Interactions

-Antacids and some antibiotics (e.g., tetracyclines) may reduce iron absorption. -Vitamin C can enhance iron absorption when taken together. -Iron can interfere with the absorption of certain medications such as levothyroxine and bisphosphonates.
