FESOTERODINE FUMARATE

FESOTERODINE FUMARATE

Fesoterodine fumarate is a medication primarily used to treat overactive bladder (OAB) symptoms, including urgency, frequency, and urinary incontinence. It belongs to the class of drugs known as antimuscarinics, which work by relaxing the bladder muscle, thus reducing urinary urgency and frequency.

Indications

Fesoterodine fumarate is indicated for the treatment of overactive bladder (OAB) symptoms in adults, including urinary urgency, frequency, and urge urinary incontinence.

Dosage

The typical starting dose of fesoterodine fumarate is 4 mg once daily, with the option to increase to 8 mg once daily based on individual response and tolerability. It is usually taken orally with or without food. Dosage adjustments may be necessary for patients with certain medical conditions or those taking other medications.

Contra-Indications

Fesoterodine fumarate is contraindicated in patients with urinary retention, gastric retention, uncontrolled narrow-angle glaucoma, or hypersensitivity to the drug or its components. It should also be avoided in patients with severe gastrointestinal motility disorders.

Special Precautions

Special precautions should be taken when prescribing fesoterodine fumarate to elderly patients, patients with hepatic or renal impairment, and those with controlled narrow-angle glaucoma. Caution is advised in patients at risk of urinary retention or decreased gastrointestinal motility.

Side Effects

Common side effects of fesoterodine fumarate may include dry mouth, constipation, blurred vision, urinary retention, and dry eyes. Less common side effects may include headache, dizziness, and gastrointestinal disturbances.

Drug Interactions

Fesoterodine fumarate may interact with other medications, including certain anticholinergic drugs, ketoconazole, clarithromycin, and other medications metabolized by the CYP3A4 enzyme. Concomitant use with potent CYP3A4 inhibitors or inducers should be avoided.
