FLUNARIZINE

It is one of the latest calcium antagonists with 'prven' anti-migraine effect. Flunarizine prevents cell damage due to calcium overload by selectively blocking the entry of calcium into the cells of tissues. It has been found to inhibit the contractions of vascular smooth muscle and protect red blood cells from membrane rigidity, and protect brain cells from the effects of hypoxia.

Indications

Prophylaxis of classical & common migraine.


Dosage

Adults:10mg at night,below 40 kg: 5mg .


Contra-Indications

pregnancy and lactation.


Special Precautions

Drowsiness may occur, and patients should not drive or operate machinery. Paediatrics: Reduced dose necessary. Pregnancy: Contraindicated. Lactation: Contraindicated. Elderly: Use with caution.


Side Effects

Drowsiness, weight gain, headache, depression, gastric pain, dry mouth, insomnia and extrapyramidal reactions.


Drug Interactions

Plasma level reduced by phenytoin, carbamazepine, valproic acid.
