FLUPENTHIXOL HCL

Flupenthixol HCL is an antipsychotic medication used primarily to manage schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders. It works by influencing the balance of neurotransmitters in the brain.

Indications

-Schizophrenia -Acute and chronic psychotic disorders -Severe anxiety -Depression with psychotic features

Dosage

-Adults: Typically, 1-3 mg daily, adjusted according to the patient's response and tolerability. Doses are often divided into 2-3 administrations per day. -Elderly: Start with a lower dose, typically 0.5-1 mg daily, and adjust as needed.

Contra-Indications

-Hypersensitivity to Flupenthixol or any of its components -Severe central nervous system depression -Comatose states -Severe liver or kidney impairment

Special Precautions

-Use with caution in patients with a history of cardiovascular disease or seizures -Monitor for signs of neuroleptic malignant syndrome -Regular monitoring of blood counts and liver function may be necessary -Caution in patients with a history of drug or alcohol abuse

Side Effects

-Common: Drowsiness, dry mouth, constipation, blurred vision, weight gain -Serious: Extrapyramidal symptoms (tremors, rigidity), tardive dyskinesia, neuroleptic malignant syndrome, prolonged QT interval

Drug Interactions

-May enhance the effects of other central nervous system depressants -Interaction with antihypertensive drugs may increase hypotensive effects -Caution when used with drugs that prolong the QT interval
