Fluticasone

Fluticasone

Fluticasone is a corticosteroid used to reduce inflammation and control symptoms in various conditions such as asthma, allergic rhinitis, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). It works by decreasing inflammation and suppressing the immune response.

Indications

-Asthma: For the management of asthma in adults and children. -Allergic Rhinitis: To relieve symptoms of allergic rhinitis, such as nasal congestion, sneezing, and runny nose. -Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD): For reducing symptoms and flare-ups in COPD patients.

Dosage

-Asthma: Typically administered as an inhalation aerosol or powder. Dosage varies based on age and severity of the condition, often starting with a low dose and adjusting as needed. -Allergic Rhinitis: Usually given as a nasal spray. The standard dose is 1 to 2 sprays per nostril once or twice daily. -COPD: Administered as an inhalation aerosol or powder. Dosage is tailored to the individual patient’s needs.

Contra-Indications

-Hypersensitivity: Do not use if allergic to Fluticasone or any of its components. -Untreated Infections: Should not be used in the presence of untreated fungal, bacterial, or viral infections. -Recent Nasal Surgery: Avoid use in patients who have recently had nasal surgery or trauma.

Special Precautions

-Systemic Effects: Long-term use may lead to systemic corticosteroid effects. Monitor for signs of adrenal suppression or Cushing’s syndrome. -Infections: Use with caution in patients with active or latent tuberculosis or other systemic infections. -Children: Special consideration is needed for children to avoid growth suppression.

Side Effects

-Common: Headache, throat irritation, cough, nasal dryness. -Serious: Adrenal suppression, growth retardation in children, systemic fungal infections, eye problems like glaucoma or cataracts.

Drug Interactions

-Ritonavir: May increase systemic exposure to Fluticasone, enhancing side effects. -Ketoconazole: Can increase plasma levels of Fluticasone, leading to increased risk of systemic effects. -Other Corticosteroids: Concurrent use with other corticosteroids can increase risk of systemic side effects.
