Gemifloxacin

It is a fourth generation fluoroquinolone. antibacterial.

Indications

Treatment of mild to moderate community acquired pneumonia and acute exacerberation of chromic bronchitis.


Dosage

320mg daily for 5 days in patients with bronchitis or for 7 days in those with pneumonia. Dose should be halved in patients with creatinine clearance of 40 ml/min or less including patients receiving haemodialysis.


Contra-Indications

Hypersensitivity.


Special Precautions

It is very important that your doctor check your progress while you are using this medicine. This will allow your doctor to see if the medicine is working properly and to decide if you should continue to take it. Blood and urine tests may be needed to check for unwanted effects.


Side Effects

Diarrhea, nausea & rash.


Drug Interactions

Do not take gemifloxacin with dairy products such as milk or yogurt, or with calcium-fortified juice. You may eat or drink these products as part of a regular meal, but do not use them alone when taking gemifloxacin. They could make the medication less effective.
