GENTAMICIN SULPHATE

Gentamicin Sulphate is an aminoglycoside antibiotic used to treat various bacterial infections. It works by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis, leading to bacterial cell death.

Indications

-Severe bacterial infections caused by Gram-negative bacteria -Respiratory tract infections -Urinary tract infections -Abdominal infections -Skin infections


Dosage

-Adults: Typically, 3 to 5 mg/kg/day divided into 2 to 3 doses. -Children: Dosage is based on body weight and the severity of the infection.


Contra-Indications

-Hypersensitivity to gentamicin or other aminoglycosides -Pre-existing kidney dysfunction -Pregnant women (unless absolutely necessary)


Special Precautions

-Monitor renal function regularly during treatment -Avoid use in patients with pre-existing neuromuscular disorders -Caution in patients with hearing impairment


Side Effects

-Nephrotoxicity (kidney damage) -Ototoxicity (hearing loss or balance issues) -Nausea and vomiting -Rash and itching


Drug Interactions

-Increased risk of nephrotoxicity when used with other nephrotoxic drugs (e.g., cisplatin, vancomycin) -Potential for increased ototoxicity with loop diuretics (e.g., furosemide) -Reduced effectiveness with concurrent use of muscle relaxants
