HOMATROPINE

HOMATROPINE

It is 10 times less potent than atropine. Instilled in eye, it acts in 45-60 mins, mydriasis lasts 1-3 days while accomodation recovers in 1 day. It is the most commonly used mydriatic in adults, but often produces unsatisfactory cycloplegia in children who have high ciliary muscle tone.

Indications

For testing error of refraction. Mydriatic & cycloplegic with more rapid onset of action & less mydriatic effect than atropine sulphate.


Dosage

1-2 drops to be instilled into each eye.


Contra-Indications

Elderly. Hypermetropia, tendency for glaucoma, shallow anterior chamber, narrow angle glaucoma.


Special Precautions

Check intra-ocular pressure before use.


Side Effects

Blurring of near vision, photophobia, palpitation, dilatation of pupil.


Drug Interactions

Antagonise antiglaucoma and miotic actions of ophthalmic anticholinesterase, carbachol or pilocarpine solutions.
