Hydroxocobalamin

Hydroxocobalamin is a form of vitamin B12 used to treat vitamin B12 deficiencies and certain types of anemia. It is also used as an antidote for cyanide poisoning.

Indications

-Vitamin B12 deficiency -Pernicious anemia -Cyanide poisoning (emergency treatment)


Dosage

-For Vitamin B12 Deficiency: Typically, 1,000 mcg intramuscularly once a week for several weeks. Maintenance doses are then administered based on individual needs. -For Cyanide Poisoning: Administered as an intravenous infusion. The dosage depends on the severity of poisoning and the specific protocol being followed.


Contra-Indications

Known hypersensitivity to Hydroxocobalamin or any of its components.


Special Precautions

-Use cautiously in patients with kidney disorders or those who are pregnant or breastfeeding. -Monitor for signs of allergic reactions during treatment.


Side Effects

-Common: Headache, dizziness, nausea, rash. -Rare: Allergic reactions, anaphylaxis, or injection site reactions.


Drug Interactions

-May interact with certain medications such as metformin and proton pump inhibitors. -Inform your healthcare provider of all medications you are taking to avoid potential interactions.
