LEVAMISOLE

Levamisole is an anthelmintic agent primarily used to treat parasitic infections. It also has immunomodulatory effects and is used as an adjunctive treatment in certain cancers and autoimmune conditions.

Indications

-Treatment of ascariasis (roundworm infection) -Treatment of hookworm infections -Adjunct therapy in certain cancers -Used in autoimmune conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis


Dosage

-Adults: Typically 150 mg to 200 mg taken once daily for 3 days, repeated every 2 weeks if necessary. -Children: Dosage is adjusted based on weight and severity of infection. Consult a healthcare provider for specific dosing.


Contra-Indications

-Hypersensitivity to Levamisole or any of its components -Severe renal or hepatic impairment -Pregnancy and breastfeeding (unless the benefits outweigh the risks)


Special Precautions

-Use with caution in patients with a history of bone marrow disorders or chronic infections. -Monitor blood counts regularly during prolonged therapy. -Ensure renal and hepatic function is adequate before starting therapy.


Side Effects

-Common: Nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain -Less common: Skin rash, dizziness, headache -Severe: Agranulocytosis, hepatotoxicity, severe allergic reactions


Drug Interactions

-May interact with other immunosuppressive agents, increasing the risk of infections or toxicity. -Avoid concurrent use with other medications that affect blood cell counts.
