Levomilnacipran

Levomilnacipran is a medication used primarily in the treatment of major depressive disorder (MDD) and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). It belongs to a class of drugs known as serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs). Levomilnacipran is the levorotatory enantiomer of milnacipran, an SNRI. It works by increasing the levels of serotonin and norepinephrine in the brain, which are neurotransmitters associated with mood regulation. Levomilnacipran is a serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor antidepressant (SNRI).

Indications

Levomilnacipran is indicated for the treatment of major depressive disorder (MDD) and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) in adults.

Dosage

-The recommended dosage of Levomilnacipran can vary based on individual patient factors and the severity of the condition. It is typically started at a low dose and then adjusted as needed. Patients should follow the prescribed dosage and consult their healthcare provider for any adjustments. -oral ; 20 to 120 mg once daily

Contra-Indications

Levomilnacipran is contraindicated in patients with a hypersensitivity to the drug or any of its components. It should not be used concomitantly with monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) or within 14 days of discontinuing MAOI therapy due to the risk of serotonin syndrome.

Special Precautions

-Special precautions should be taken in patients with a history of bipolar disorder, seizure disorder, or liver impairment. Levomilnacipran may increase the risk of suicidal thoughts, especially in young adults. Regular monitoring by healthcare professionals is essential. Paediatric: Safety and efficacy in pediatric patients have not been established Pregnancy: Category C; It should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Lactation: it is not known whether it is excreted into the breast milk Elderly: No overall differences in safety or effectiveness have been observed between elderly and other adult patients.

Side Effects

-Common side effects of levomilnacipran include nausea, headache, dry mouth, increased heart rate, insomnia, and constipation. Drug Interactions

Levomilnacipran may interact with other medications, including MAOIs, linezolid, intravenous methylene blue, and other drugs that affect serotonin levels. Inform healthcare providers about all medications, including over-the-counter drugs and herbal supplements, before starting levomilnacipran.
