LIQUID PARAFFIN
Liquid paraffin, also known as mineral oil, is a clear, odorless, and tasteless oil derived from petroleum. It is commonly used as a laxative to treat constipation by lubricating the stool and the intestines. In addition to its laxative properties, liquid paraffin can also serve as an emollient in skin care products to moisturize and protect dry, sensitive skin.Liquid paraffin is primarily used as a short-term treatment for constipation in adults and children. It may also be used as a skin moisturizer in topical formulations for dry skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis.
15-30 ml/day-oil as such or in emulsified form.
-Liquid paraffin should not be used in individuals with a known allergy to it. -It should be avoided in patients with intestinal obstruction, abdominal pain, or undiagnosed gastrointestinal issues.
-Prolonged use may also lead to dependency and reduced bowel motility. -Inhalation or aspiration of liquid paraffin can cause serious lung damage, so it should be used with caution in those with swallowing difficulties.
Oral Laxative: Common side effects include diarrhea, abdominal discomfort, and nausea. In rare cases, lipid pneumonia may occur due to aspiration.
Liquid paraffin may decrease the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins and certain medications taken orally. Consult a healthcare provider for specific interactions with other medications.
