LORAZEPAM
It provides prompt relief from a variety of symptoms associated with anxiety and in anxiety associated with depression. It presumably exert its effect by binding to specific receptors at several sites within the central nervous system either by potentiating the effects of synaptic or presynaptic inhibition mediated by gama-aminobutyric acid or by directly affecting the action potential generating mechanisms.Anxiety disorders, anxiety associated with depressive symptoms. Anxiety component in psychotic states. Pre-surgical medication. Symptomatic treatment of nausea & vomiting associated with cancer chemotherapy.
2-3mg daily in divided doses.Max10mg daily.
Hypersensitivity to benzo-diazepines.
Acute narrow angle glaucoma, renal or hepatic impairment, periodic blood counts & liver function tests in prolong therapy. Drug abuse & dependence, memory impairment. Paediatrics:Contraindicated below the age of 12yrs. Pregnancy: Contraindicated. Lactation: Safety not established. Elderly: Use with caution especially in patients with pre-existing drowsiness and confusion.
Sedation followed by dizziness, weakness & unsteadiness. Disorientation, depression, nausea, change in appetite, headache, sleep disturbance.
Potentiation of CNS depression produced by alcohol, general anaesthetics, narcotic analgesics, tricyclic antidepressants and MAOIs.
