Losartan Potassium
It is an angiotensin II receptor (type AT1) antagonist. Losartan and its principle active metabolite block the vasoconstrictor and aldosterone-secreting effects of angiotensin II by selectively blocking the binding of angiotensin II to the AT1.Mild to moderate hypertension alone or in combination with other antihypertensives.
25-100 mg once or twice daily. Starting and maintenance dose: 50 mg once a day. In volume depleted patients: 25 mg once daily.
Hypersensitivity, pregnancy.
Should not be used with potassium sparing diuretics. Monitor serum potassium in elderly patients and patients with renal impairment. Paediatrics: Safety not established. Pregnancy: Contraindicated. Lactation: Contraindicated.
Diarrhoea, dyspepsia, myalgia oedema, dizziness & headache.
Cimetidine increases the AUC of losartan by about 18%. Risk of hyperkalemia increases with concomitant use of potassium sparing diuretics or potassium supplements.
