LOTEPREDNOL ETABONATE

Loteprednol Etabonate is a corticosteroid used for its anti-inflammatory properties in treating ocular conditions. Its unique "soft steroid" formulation minimizes systemic side effects and is suitable for short-term use.

Indications

-Seasonal allergic conjunctivitis -Postoperative ocular inflammation -Uveitis and other anterior segment inflammatory conditions -Dry eye syndrome (off-label use)


Dosage

-Adults: Instill 1-2 drops into the affected eye(s) every 4 to 6 hours. -In severe conditions, the dosage may be increased to 1-2 drops every hour during the initial 24-48 hours. -Tapering the dose is recommended to minimize withdrawal effects. -Children: Dosage to be prescribed by a physician.


Contra-Indications

-Hypersensitivity to Loteprednol or any other components of the formulation. -Viral, fungal, or mycobacterial eye infections (e.g., herpes simplex keratitis, tuberculosis). -Active untreated infections of the eye.


Special Precautions

-Long-term use can increase the risk of glaucoma, cataracts, or secondary infections. -Monitor intraocular pressure (IOP) during prolonged therapy. -Avoid use with contact lenses unless advised. -Use under strict medical supervision in pregnant or lactating women.


Side Effects

-Temporary blurred vision or discomfort upon application. -Increased intraocular pressure (glaucoma). -Cataract formation with prolonged use. -Eye pain, redness, or irritation.


Drug Interactions

-Avoid concurrent use with other ocular corticosteroids to reduce cumulative side effects. -May interact with antiglaucoma medications, potentially altering IOP levels. -Combining with NSAIDs can increase corneal healing complications.
