Lumefatrine with Artemether

Lumefantrine with Artemether is a combination medication used for the treatment of uncomplicated malaria. Artemether is an artemisinin derivative, and Lumefantrine is a synthetic antimalarial drug. Together, they provide a synergistic approach to combat malaria parasites.

Indications

-Uncomplicated Malaria: Effective against Plasmodium falciparum malaria, including cases resistant to other antimalarial drugs. -It has important action against P.falciparum and mixed infections containing P.falciparum. It is highly effective against both chloroquine sensitive as well as chloroquine resistant P.falciparum. It has been used with success in multi-drug resistant malaria and in patients with low immunity. Some travelers who visit isolated and remote areas during their travel are cut off from emrgency and essential medical services, it is indicated for use in such cases which is referred to as stand-by emergen

Dosage

Dosage is determined based on the patient's weight and the severity of the malaria infection. The medication is typically administered orally with food to enhance absorption.

Contra-Indications

-Hypersensitivity: Avoid in patients with known hypersensitivity to lumefantrine, artemether, or any component of the combination. -Severe Malaria: Not indicated for the treatment of severe or complicated malaria.

Special Precautions

-Liver Dysfunction: Use with caution in patients with liver impairment; monitor liver function during treatment. -Cardiac Issues: Evaluate cardiovascular status before prescribing, especially in patients with pre-existing cardiac conditions.

Side Effects

Common side effects include gastrointestinal disturbances, headache, and dizziness. Serious side effects are rare but may include cardiac arrhythmias or allergic reactions.

Drug Interactions

-QT Prolonging Drugs: Caution is advised when combining with drugs that may prolong the QT interval. -Enzyme Inducers/Inhibitors: Drugs that affect hepatic enzymes may influence the metabolism of lumefantrine. -Amitriptyline, Azithromycin, Chloroquine, Ciprofloxacin, Fluconazole, Furosemide, Mefloquine, Ofloxacin, Pyrimethamine, Quinine, Sulfadoxine+Pyrimethamine.
