Mepacrine Hydrochloride

Mepacrine Hydrochloride, also known as Quinacrine, is an antimalarial drug that also possesses immunosuppressive and anti-inflammatory properties. It is primarily used to treat malaria and certain autoimmune conditions.

Indications

-Treatment of malaria -Management of lupus erythematosus -Treatment of giardiasis -Adjuvant therapy in some autoimmune conditions


Dosage

Malaria: For prophylaxis and suppression against Falciparum 0.6 to 0.7g / per week, may be recommended in divided doses, for treatment 0.9g on the first day 0.6g 2nd & 3rd days and 0.3g on 4th, 5th and 6th days may be given in divided doses.


Contra-Indications

-Hypersensitivity to mepacrine or any of its components -Patients with severe hepatic or renal impairment -Patients with a history of psychiatric disorders


Special Precautions

-Regular monitoring of liver function and blood counts is recommended during prolonged use -Use with caution in patients with a history of jaundice -Avoid exposure to sunlight as mepacrine can cause photosensitivity -Discontinue use and seek medical advice if severe side effects occur


Side Effects

-Nausea and vomiting -Headache and dizziness -Yellow discoloration of the skin and urine -Photosensitivity and skin rashes -Psychiatric disturbances such as anxiety and depression


Drug Interactions

-May interact with other antimalarial drugs -Concurrent use with other hepatotoxic drugs can increase the risk of liver damage -Inform your healthcare provider about all other medications and supplements you are taking
