METHOCARBAMOL

It preferentially blocks spinal polysynaptic reflexes & produces little sedation in doses that cause muscle relaxation.

Indications

Skeletal muscle spasm. Chronic neurological diseases & in orthopaedic/surgical procedures


Dosage

Orally 500-1500 mg. 4-6 hrly. i.v./i.m.-100-200 mg. 6 hrly. Tetanus: 100-300 mg I.V. over 10-15 mts. Then 200 mg. every 6 hrs until oral therapy can be started by dose of 18-40 Tabs(500mg each) daily in divided doses 4-6 hrly.


Contra-Indications

Hypersensitivity, coma, known brain damage, epilepsy, myasthenia gravis. Use of injection in renal impairment.


Special Precautions

Renal or hepatic disorder, pregnancy, lactation. Paediatrics: Not recommended in children below 12 years of age. Pregnancy: Contraindicated. Lactations: Contraindicated. Elderly: Reduced dose necessary.


Side Effects

Headache, anorexia, nausea, vertigo, fever, skin eruptions, drowsiness.


Drug Interactions

CNS depressants, anorectics of anticholinergics are potentiated by methocarbamol.
