Metronidazole Benzoate is an antimicrobial medication used primarily for its antibacterial and antiprotozoal effects. It is commonly used to treat various infections caused by anaerobic bacteria and certain parasites.

Indications

-Treatment of bacterial infections caused by anaerobic bacteria. -Management of protozoal infections, including those caused by Trichomonas vaginalis and Giardia lamblia. -Treatment of skin conditions such as rosacea.


Dosage

-Adult Dose: Typically 500 mg to 750 mg taken orally 2-3 times daily for 7-10 days, depending on the infection being treated. -Pediatric Dose: Dosing for children is based on body weight and the specific infection, usually adjusted according to medical advice.


Contra-Indications

-Hypersensitivity to metronidazole or any of its components. -Pregnant women, especially during the first trimester, unless the benefits outweigh the risks. -Patients with a history of blood disorders or severe liver impairment.


Special Precautions

-Use with caution in patients with liver disease. -Caution is advised when used in combination with alcohol due to the risk of disulfiram-like reactions. -Monitor for signs of peripheral neuropathy in long-term use.

Drug Interactions

-May interact with alcohol, causing a disulfiram-like reaction (flushing, nausea, vomiting). -May potentiate the effects of anticoagulants like warfarin. -May reduce the effectiveness of oral contraceptives.
