MIANSERIN

It does not inhibit NA or 5-HT uptake; does not interfere with antihypertensive action of guanethidine and clonidine. Drug has a pronounced presynaptic alpha 2 adrenergic blocking action which may increase NA release from neurones in brain.

Indications

Psychotic & neurotic epression. Obsessive compulsive neurosis and phobic states.


Dosage

30-60 mg in div. or single bed time dose. In elderly patients lower dose should be adjusted.


Contra-Indications

Pregnancy, nursing mothers. Severe hepatic impairment. Cardiovascular disease, hypomania or mania.


Special Precautions

Ischaemic heart disease. Liver insufficiency. Elderly. Diabetes, renal or hepatic impairment. Drive or operate heavy machinery.


Side Effects

Drowsiness, impaired alertness. Blood dyscrasias, jaundice & fits may be precipitated, specially in childre Rashes.


Drug Interactions

CNS depressant effects enhanced by alcohol, sedatives, hypnotics. Blood levels decreased by phenobarbitone, carbamazepine, phenytoin.
