Miglitol

Miglitol

Miglitol is a alpha glucosidase inhibitor similar in action to acarbose.

Indications

In the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus alone or with a sulfonylurea.


Dosage

Usual initial doses are 25mg three times daily with meals, increased if necessary to max of 100mg three time daily.


Contra-Indications

Hypersensitivity, renal clearance r the presence of inflammatory bowel disease, diabetic ketoacidosis,colonic ulceration, or partial intestinal obstruction.


Special Precautions

Hypoglycaemia.


Side Effects

Adverse reactions:Abdominal pain, diarrhea, flatulence, skin rash.


Drug Interactions

Miglitol may significantly reduce the bioavailability of ranitidine and propranolol. Intestinal adsorbents (e.g., charcoal) and digestive enzyme preparations containing carbohydrate splitting enzymes (e.g., amylase, pancreatin) may reduce the effect and should not be taken concomitantly.
