Mirtazapine

Mirtazapine

It is a tetracyclic antidepressant.

Indications

Depression.


Dosage

Initial treatment: The recommended starting dose of mirtazapine is 15mg/day, administered as a single dose, preferably in the evening prior to sleep. The effective dose range is 15 to 45mg/day. Maintenance/extended treatment: The pharmacological treatment of acute episodes of depression should continue for upto 6 months or longer.


Contra-Indications

Patients with known hypersensitivity to mirtazapine. Pediatric patients.


Special Precautions

Agranulocytosis. Interference with cognitive and motor performance. Patient should be cautioned about engaging in hazardous activities like driving, working on machines.


Side Effects

Increased appetite, asthenia, flu like syndrome, back pain. Dry mouth, and constipation. Weight gain, peripheral oedema. Myalgia. Dizziness, Somnolence, abnormal dreams, abnormal thinking, tremor, and confusion. Dyspnoea, Urinary frequency.


Drug Interactions

Drugs that are metabolized by and/or inhibit cytochrome P450 enzymes : Mirtazapine is not a potent inhibitor of various cytochrome P450 enzymes. Alcohol : Impairment of cognitive and motor skills produced by mirtazapine has been shown to be additive to those produced by alcohol. Patient are advised to avoid alcohol while taking mirtazapine. Diazepam : Impairment of cognitive and motor skills produced by mirtazapine has been shown to be additive to those produced by diazepam. Patients are advised
