MISOPROSTOL

Misoprostol is a synthetic prostaglandin analogue which has antisecretory and protective properties.

Indications

Gastric ulcer, duodenal ulcer. Prevention of NSAID-associated gastric ulcer (especially in elderly in whom NSAIDs cannot be withdrawn).


Dosage

Adults : Benign gastric, duodonal and NSAID-associated ulcers : 800mcg daily in 2-4 divided doses with breakfast (or main meal) & at bedtime. Treatment should be continued for minimum 4 weeks and upto 8 weeks. Prophylaxis : 200mcg, 2-4 times daily.


Contra-Indications

Women of child bearing age should be advised misoprostol only if they take effective contraceptive measure.


Special Precautions

Conditions where hypotension may precipitate severe complications e.g., cerebrovascular disease, cardiovascular disease.


Side Effects

Diarrhoea, abdominal pain, dyspepsia, flatulence, nausea, vomiting, abnormal vaginal bleeding (inter menstural bleeding, menorrhagia, post menopausal bleeding). Rashes, dizziness.


Drug Interactions

Analgesics : Increased risk of CNS toxicity with phenylbutazone.
