MORPHINE SULPHATE

Morphine Sulphate is used to treat severe pain. Morphine belongs to a class of drugs known as opioid (narcotic) analgesics. It works in the brain to change how your body feels and responds to pain.

Indications

Prolonged relief of severe and intractable pain.


Dosage

Adults : 10mg-100mg alone or in combination, single or in divided dosage. Children: 0.2-0.8 mg/kg 12 hourly


Contra-Indications

Respiratory depression, paralytic ileus, delayed gastric emptying, obstructive airway disease, morphine sensitivity, acute hepatic disease, pregnancy, pre-operative administration, post-operative pain in children.


Special Precautions

Hypothyroidism in renal & chronic hepatic disease. Paediatrics: Contraindicated. Pregnancy: Use with caution. Lactation: Contraindicated. Elderly: Use with caution.


Side Effects

Tolerance, dependence, nausea, vomitting & constipation


Drug Interactions

Tranquilisers, anaesthetics, hypnotics and sedative.
