Naphazoline

Naphazoline is a sympathomimetic drug commonly used as a topical vasoconstrictor. It is primarily used in eye drops and nasal sprays to relieve redness and congestion by constricting blood vessels.

Indications

-Eye Drops: Used to relieve redness and irritation of the eyes caused by allergens, smoke, wind, or other environmental irritants. -Nasal Spray: Used to relieve nasal congestion due to colds, allergies, or sinusitis.


Dosage

-Eye Drops: Typically, 1-2 drops in the affected eye(s) 2-3 times a day. -Nasal Spray: Usually, 1-2 sprays in each nostril 2-3 times a day


Contra-Indications

-Hypersensitivity: Known allergy to naphazoline or any of the product's components. -Glaucoma: Should be avoided in patients with narrow-angle glaucoma. -Severe Cardiovascular Conditions: Not recommended for those with severe cardiovascular diseases.


Special Precautions

-Pregnancy: Use only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. -Breastfeeding: Caution is advised as it may be excreted in breast milk. -Children: Use with caution in children; dosage adjustments may be necessary.


Side Effects

-Eye Drops: May cause temporary stinging, redness, or irritation. -Nasal Spray: Possible side effects include dryness, irritation, or rebound congestion.


Drug Interactions

MAO Inhibitors: Potential interactions may occur with MAO inhibitors, increasing the risk of systemic effects. Other Vasoconstrictors: Use with other vasoconstrictors may increase the risk of adverse effects.
