Nitazoxanide

It is a synthetic antiprotozoal drug; 2-acetyloxy-N-(5-nitro-2-thiazolyl) benzamide. Nitazoxanide exhibits antiprotozoal activity by interfering with PFOR (Pyruvate:ferredoxin oxidoreductase) enzyme dependent electron transport reaction that is essential for anaerobic energy metabolism.

Indications

-Diarrhoea & Dysentery caused by Giardia lamblia & Cryptosporitidium parvum & Entamoeba histolytica. -Infections caused by Helminthes e.g. Trichuris trichiura, Ascaris lumbricoides, Hymenolepiasis nana & Enterobius vermicularis.


Dosage

1-3 years : Nitazoxanide 100mg (5ml) BID for 3 days. 4-11 years : Nitazoxanide 200mg (10ml) BID for 3 days. 12 years & above : Nitazoxanide 500mg BID for 3 days. Pediatric dosage : 7.5mg/kg BID for 3 days.


Contra-Indications

-Hypersensitivity to nitazoxanide or any components of the formulation -Not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding unless prescribed by a healthcare provider


Special Precautions

Nitazoxanide must be administered with caution in patients of hepatic, renal & biliary disease. Pregnancy: Category B.


Side Effects

-Common side effects include nausea, abdominal pain, headache, and dizziness -Rare but serious side effects may include allergic reactions and liver toxicity

No significant drug interactions have been reported; however, always inform healthcare providers about all medications being taken
