Nitrendipine

It is a long acting second generation Calcium Channel Blocker. It acts by inhibiting the movement of Calcium through the slow channels of cardiac and vascular smooth muscles thus inducing peripheral vasodilation with consequent reduction in elevated Blood Pressure. Nitrendipine inhibits contractions of vascular smooth muscles induced by various stimuli, and does not alter conduction through sinus or arterioventricular node.

Indications

Mild to moderate hypertension


Dosage

5-20 mg once daily in morning. Max. 40 mg/day in 1-2 doses


Contra-Indications

Gastroesophagal reflux diseae-relaxes lower esophagal sphincter Diabetes-decreases insulin release


Special Precautions

Pregnancy, lactation. Paediatrics: Not recommended. Pregnancy: Caution should be taken. Lactation: Contraindicated. Elderly: Reduced dose may be necessary. Have more side effects.


Side Effects

Headache,flushing,oedema,palpita-tions.


Drug Interactions

Synergistic effect on angina with beta blockers. Reduced plasma levels of quinidine. Theophylline & phenytoin raise plasma levels. Cimetidine increases bio-availability & may potentiate hypotension.
