OIL OF WINTERGREEN

Oil of Wintergreen, also known as methyl salicylate, is derived from the leaves of the wintergreen plant. It is known for its characteristic minty aroma and is commonly used for its analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties.

Indications

-Relief of muscle and joint pain -Treatment of minor aches and pains associated with arthritis, backache, and sprains -Used in some liniments and topical analgesics


Dosage

-Topical Application: Apply a small amount to the affected area 3-4 times daily. Do not use on broken skin or near the eyes. -Inhalation (Aromatherapy): Add a few drops to a diffuser or inhaler as needed.


Contra-Indications

-Hypersensitivity to methyl salicylate or salicylates -Use in children under 12 years of age -Active peptic ulcer disease -Severe liver or kidney dysfunction -During pregnancy and breastfeeding without medical advice


Special Precautions

-Avoid contact with eyes and mucous membranes -Do not apply to broken or irritated skin -Use with caution in patients with aspirin sensitivity -Keep out of reach of children -Wash hands thoroughly after use -Discontinue use if rash or irritation develops


Side Effects

-Skin irritation or rash -Allergic reactions in sensitive individuals -Rarely, systemic absorption can cause salicylate toxicity, especially with excessive use or in children


Drug Interactions

-Anticoagulants (e.g., warfarin) – increased risk of bleeding -Other topical salicylates – potential for increased systemic absorption and toxicity -NSAIDs – potential for additive side effects
