Pheniramine maleate

Pheniramine maleate is an antihistamine used to relieve symptoms of allergic reactions, including hay fever, allergic rhinitis, and urticaria. It works by blocking the action of histamine, a substance in the body that causes allergic symptoms.

Indications

-Allergic rhinitis -Hay fever -Urticaria (hives) -Allergic conjunctivitis


Dosage

-Adults: Typically 25 mg to 50 mg every 4 to 6 hours as needed. Do not exceed 300 mg per day. -Children: Dosage should be adjusted according to age and weight; consult a pediatrician for specific dosing instructions.


Contra-Indications

-Hypersensitivity to pheniramine or any of its components -Patients with severe liver or kidney impairment -Pregnant or breastfeeding women (unless prescribed by a physician)


Special Precautions

-Use with caution in patients with a history of asthma, chronic bronchitis, or emphysema. -May cause drowsiness; avoid driving or operating heavy machinery. -Use cautiously in elderly patients due to increased susceptibility to side effects. -Consult a physician before use in patients with glaucoma or prostate enlargement.

Drug Interactions

-Alcohol and other central nervous system depressants may enhance the drowsiness effect. -May interact with other antihistamines or medications that cause sedation. -Avoid concurrent use with monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs).
