PHOLCODINE

Pholcodine is a medication used as a cough suppressant, typically found in various cough syrups.

Indications

-Relief of dry, irritating coughs. -Cough associated with bronchitis and respiratory tract infections.


Dosage

-Adult dosage: Typically 10-20 mg every 4-6 hours. -Children dosage: Adjusted based on weight and age, usually under medical supervision.


Contra-Indications

-Known hypersensitivity to pholcodine. -Severe respiratory insufficiency. -Risk of paralytic ileus.


Special Precautions

-Use cautiously in patients with asthma or respiratory disease. -Avoid in patients prone to drug abuse due to its potential as a mild narcotic.


Side Effects

Drug Interactions

-Potentiates effects of alcohol and other CNS depressants. -Concurrent use with MAOIs can lead to hypertensive crisis.
