Phytonadione

Phytonadione is a synthetic form of Vitamin K, essential for blood clotting and bone health.

Indications

-Treatment and prevention of hypoprothrombinemia (deficiency of clotting factor II) -Antidote for coumarin anticoagulant overdosage -Prevention of hemorrhagic disease of the newborn


Dosage

-Oral: Typically 2.5 to 25 mg/day, adjusted based on individual patient response -Parenteral (IV/IM): Dosage varies; typically administered under medical supervision


Contra-Indications

-Hypersensitivity to vitamin K or any component of the formulation -Severe liver disease


Special Precautions

-Use caution in patients with biliary obstruction or malabsorption syndromes -Monitor coagulation parameters during therapy, especially in patients on anticoagulants


Side Effects

-Rarely, allergic reactions (e.g., rash, itching) -Injection site reactions (IV/IM)


Drug Interactions

-Enhanced effect with oral anticoagulants (e.g., warfarin) -May reduce the efficacy of vitamin K antagonists
