Piperacillin

Piperacillin

It is recently developed penicillin which has activity similar to carbenicillin or ticarcillin against Pseudomonas and inhibit Klebsiella as well. They have been used for infections caused by these organisms as well as for mixed aerobic-anaerobic infections.

Indications

Systemic & local infections, pre- operative prophylaxis, gynaecological infections, U.T.I. neonatal & life-threatening paediatric infections. Burns, septicaemia


Dosage

To be given i.v. or i.m. 6-8 gm/day. Serious & complicated infections 12-18 gm/day.


Contra-Indications

Hypersensitivity to penicillin or Cephalosporins.


Special Precautions

In pregnancy only when essential. Neuromuscular excitability or convulsions may occur. Paediatrics: Safety in children below 12 yrs not established and in neonates not known. Pregnancy: No risk. Lactation: Use with caution. Elderly: Safe.


Side Effects

High doses may cause bleeding by interferring with platelet function.


Drug Interactions

Inactivate aminoglycoside, synergistic with cephalosporins, clearance of piperacillin reduced by probenecid
