Policosanol

It is a new cholesterol lowering drug. It is a mixture of alcohols isolated and purified from sugar cane. It decrease total cholesterol, low density lipoprotein, and increase high density lipoprotein by inhibiting cholesterol synthesis and increasing LDL processing.

Indications

Improves lipid profile in patients with type-II hypercholesterolemia, type-II diabetes with hypercholesterolemia, postmenopausal women with hypercholesterolemia and combined hypercholesterolemia with abnormal liver function tests. Decrease risk factors of cardiovascular endotherial damage, and smooth muscle cells proliferation. Atherosclerosis. Intermittent claudication.


Dosage

10-20mg daily.


Contra-Indications

Safety has not established in paediatric, pregnancy and lactation.


Side Effects

Headache, dizziness, polyphagia, asthenia, somnolence and insomnia.
