Polyvidone

Polyvidone, also known as povidone or polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), is a synthetic polymer widely used in pharmaceutical and medical applications. It acts as a binder, film-former, stabilizer, and solubilizer in various formulations.

Indications

-Used as a binder in tablet manufacturing -Employed in ophthalmic solutions as a lubricant -Included in topical antiseptic solutions -Acts as a plasma volume expander in cases of significant blood loss -Used in liquid formulations to improve the solubility of active ingredients


Dosage

-Tablet binder: Typically, 1-5% w/w of the tablet formulation -Ophthalmic solutions: As directed by the ophthalmologist Topical antiseptics: Apply a thin layer to the affected area 1-3 times daily -Plasma expander: Dosage is determined by the healthcare provider based on patient needs


Contra-Indications

-Hypersensitivity to povidone or any of its components -Severe renal impairment (when used as a plasma expander) -Use with caution in patients with thyroid disorders


Special Precautions

-Monitor renal function in patients with pre-existing kidney conditions -Avoid excessive use in patients with thyroid issues -Keep out of reach of children Use under medical supervision in pregnant and breastfeeding women


Side Effects

-Local irritation or redness when applied topically -Allergic reactions such as rash or itching -Potential thyroid dysfunction with prolonged use -Rarely, renal impairment when used as a plasma expander


Drug Interactions

-May interact with iodine-containing medications -Reduced efficacy when used concomitantly with certain antiseptics -Possible interaction with thyroid medications
