PRAZIQUANTEL

Praziquantel is an anthelmintic medication used to treat a variety of parasitic worm infections, including schistosomiasis and liver flukes.

Indications

-Schistosomiasis -Liver fluke infections -Tapeworm infections


Dosage

-Schistosomiasis: Typically, 20 mg/kg body weight three times a day for 1 day. -Liver flukes: Typically, 25 mg/kg body weight three times a day for 1 day. -Tapeworms: Typically, 5-10 mg/kg body weight as a single dose.


Contra-Indications

-Hypersensitivity to praziquantel or any component of the formulation. -Ocular cysticercosis (parasitic infection of the eye).


Special Precautions

-Use with caution in patients with hepatic impairment. -May impair ability to drive or operate machinery; caution is advised. -Use with caution during pregnancy and breastfeeding.


Side Effects

-Common: Headache, dizziness, nausea, abdominal discomfort. -Rare: Arrhythmias, liver enzyme elevations, allergic reactions.


Drug Interactions

-Rifampin can reduce praziquantel levels. -Carbamazepine and phenytoin may also reduce praziquantel efficacy. -Concurrent use with strong CYP450 inducers should be monitored.
