PROBIOTICS

Live microorganisms which confer a health benefit on the host are called probiotics. Although, several microorganisms are used in probiotics products, but commonly used probiotics are strains of Lactic acid bacteria eg. Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium and streptococcus. Probiotics are well absorbed when given orally.

Indications

Gastrointestinal disorders : Antibiotic induced/associated diarrhoea. Prevention, recurrence and to shorten duration of diarrhoea in children. Acute diarrhoea in young children. Infant diarrhoea. Nosocomial diarrhoea especially in infants and young children. Nosocomial rotavirus gastroenteritis. Clostridium difficile diarrhoea. HIV/AIDS diarrhoea. Enternal feeding associated diarrhoea. Acute infections diarrhoea, eg. rotavirus induced diarrhoea. To inprove intestinal immunity. Abdominal cramping


Dosage

A minimum of one billion/day live cells of bacterial should be consumed orally.


Contra-Indications

Hypersensitivity rarely.


Special Precautions

Although seem safe, but available information is limited.


Side Effects

Infections by probiotics are extremely rare.
