Promethazine Hcl

Promethazine Hydrochloride is an antihistamine used to relieve allergy symptoms, motion sickness, nausea, and vomiting. It is also used as a sedative and preoperative medication.

Indications

-Allergy Relief: Treats allergic reactions including rhinitis and conjunctivitis. -Motion Sickness: Prevents and treats nausea, vomiting, and dizziness associated with motion sickness. -Nausea & Vomiting: Used to manage nausea and vomiting from various causes. -Sedation: Provides sedation and can be used as a preoperative medication.


Dosage

-Adults: Typically 12.5 to 25 mg orally every 4 to 6 hours as needed, not exceeding 100 mg per day. -Children (2 to 5 years): 6.25 mg every 4 to 6 hours as needed, not exceeding 25 mg per day. -Children (6 to 12 years): 12.5 to 25 mg every 4 to 6 hours as needed, not exceeding 75 mg per day.


Contra-Indications

-Hypersensitivity: Contraindicated in individuals with known hypersensitivity to promethazine or any of its components. -Severe Respiratory Depression: Should not be used in patients with severe respiratory depression or obstructive sleep apnea. -Children Under 2 Years: Not recommended due to risk of severe respiratory depression.


Special Precautions

-Elderly Patients: Use with caution as they may be more susceptible to side effects. -Pregnancy: Should be used only if the potential benefit justifies the risk to the fetus. -Liver Disease: Caution is advised in patients with liver impairment. Glaucoma: Use with caution in patients with glaucoma.


Side Effects

-Common: Drowsiness, dizziness, dry mouth, blurred vision. -Serious: Severe allergic reactions, difficulty breathing, irregular heartbeat, confusion.


Drug Interactions

-CNS Depressants: May enhance the effects of alcohol, sedatives, and other CNS depressants. -MAO Inhibitors: May increase the risk of serious side effects. -Anticholinergic Drugs: May have additive anticholinergic effects.
